Old Town San Diego Hotels
The historic Old Town area of San Diego transcends all that the city and the area have endured over the last 460 years. Since the time of Juan Cabrillo, the Old Town area has helped build the city into what it is today.
Starting out as a presidio, (coming from a latin presidium meaning garrison or military post), the area would gently drift into a more peaceful roll and become a pueblo (a town or village.). It would continue to be the main part of the city up until the mid-eighteenth century, when focus would be directed to "New Town", Alonzo Horton’s new development along the shores of San Diego Bay.
There is now much to see and do here, as the whole area is now a State Historic Park and much of the area has been restored to its former glory. There are fine restaurants celebrating the Spanish heritage of the area, curio shops and art studios and wonderfully restored Victorian houses that bring the era back to life in full, living detail. The area also plays host to many special events that bring out the feel of our Spanish heritage on a daily basis. Old Town offers it all, and is one of the finest destinations in San Diego.
